DNA Sequencing / Biotechnology

 

SHA students not only study scientific breakthroughs—they make them. In our college-level Honors Biotechnology Laboratory course, students embark on high-tech gene discovery work using an Applied Biosystems SeqStudio Genetic Analyzer (the gold standard for sequencing technology).

Working as a research team, students study a gene of their choice and learn to:

  • Extract DNA from an organism
  • Amplify and sequence the gene of interest
  • Design their own experiments
  • Master the skills of PCR, purification and quantitation, automated sequencing, and bioinformatics
  • Present their research to scientists, such as those at New York’s Columbia University

The result

SHA students have more than 30 published sequences in GenBank, the National Institutes of Health genetic sequence database—and are also prepared and inspired for a future in the sciences.
