EARLY COLLEGE PROGRAMS

Get ahead on your college academic experience by completing college credit in high school!

AP COURSES

The AP Program offers college-level courses and exams that you can take in high school. Taking AP courses and exams in high school could give you an advantage in college by letting you:

  1. Earn College Credit and Placement

  2. Save Money and Time

  3. Stand Out to Colleges

  4. Keep Your Options Open

Research consistently shows that AP students are better prepared for college than students who don’t take AP, regardless of their exam score. They’re more likely to enroll and stay in college, do well in their classes, and graduate in four years. (College Board 2023)

UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN

Through University of New Haven (UNH), our juniors and seniors (and outstanding, faculty recommended sophomores) can take one course a year for free!

  1. SHA students may take one (1) course on ground at UNewHaven per year at no tuition cost, with a maximum of three lifetime. The student is still responsible for course fees, books, and transportation to campus, when applicable.

  2. Interested students would complete a precollege application (personal statement and unofficial transcript are needed) to be considered either for the fall or spring semester in an academic year.

  3. Accepted students choose their course with over 70 different options available across a variety of subject areas (ie: Development of American Sports, Personal Finance, History of Latin America, Intro to Criminal Justice to name a few).

  4. Accepted students (and their families) attend a virtual orientation, a UNH representative meets with them the day of their first class, and then has virtual and in-person check-ins during the semester they are taking their course.

SOUTHERN CT STATE UNIVERSITY

Through Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), several of our courses at SHA will carry college credit through the Dual Enrollment program. Students would have to enroll in these like they have for ECE.

Apart from that, our juniors and seniors who maintain a 3.0 g.p.a. or higher canapply to take courses on campus at SCSU. For $65, (plus any application fee, lab fee and textbook costs) a SHA student can take up to 2 courses per semester on campus at SCSU. There is an application process for this; please see the information on the SCSU website
