SHA Is The Only High School To Participate In Biotechnology Conference

April 24th, 2024 by Kara Redente

This year's Honors Biotechnology class just returned from presenting their MSH2 (mutS homolog2) gene research at the 5th International Conference on Cell and Experimental Biology to be held in Baltimore from April 22nd – April 24th, 2024. Sacred Heart Academy was the ONLY high school in the country to participate in this conference which brings together the most influential pioneers, speakers, keynotes, informative panels and some of the best networking you'll find in the field of biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, investigative pathology, pharmacology, and physiology.

The team's research focused on the MSH2 (mutS homolog2) gene which is part of the DNA Mismatch Repair (MMR) System, that is responsible for maintaining genome integrity. Mutations in this gene have often been linked to a variety of cancers such as colorectal cancer (CRC). The following students are part of the research team: Meghan Brown, Camilla Ferro, Lia Hey, Maya Quaranta, Chloe Retuya, Surita Williams and Sasha Vaughn.

Congratulations to this team and Dr. Sengupta for the exceptional work that they have done and for having the confidence and courage to participate in a conference surrounded by professionals.
