Proudly Celebrating 75 Years of Excelsior
January 13th, 2022
On September 9, 1946, Sacred Heart Academy opened its doors on Greene Street in New Haven, providing young women with a new opportunity to lead and make a difference.
Founded by the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (then known as the Missionary Zelatrices of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) and established by Sr. M. Antonine Signorelli, the Academy set out to provide girls with a strong college-preparatory education in the Catholic tradition — a tradition that continues to this day. Though only a small number of Sacred Heart Academy alumnae can say that they knew Sr. Antonine, there is no doubt that her influence has endured long beyond the years she spent as principal. Sr. Antonine was born in Missouri in 1915, making her barely 31 years old when SHA opened its doors on Greene Street in New Haven in 1946.
Today, our school has expanded to meet the needs of our students, while remaining grounded in the charism of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the spirit of faith, truth, and love. It is an exciting time for the Academy — from our latest endeavors, such as the Bloomberg Finance Program and the Excelsior Enrichment Program, to our consistent commitment to developing a deep spirit of love for the Heart of Christ and to share that love with others, and a strong sense of intellectual adventure and achievement.
All of us who have been fortunate to be part of the Sacred Heart story are forever connected by Strong Bonds that will continue to grow for the next 75 years and more.
